Introduction to Japan

We begin our unit on Japan with a short Multimedia presentation (Osaka). The presentation covered key aspects of Japan: culture, government, tourist sites, economy, geography, history, attractions, flag, food, population, religion, and languages spoken, etc. During the DVD presentation students had to take notes and afterwards answer questions on what they learned about Japan.

China Poster Presentation

The students created a poster that illustrated the key facts of China: culture, government, maps, economy, attractions, flag, food, population, religion, and languages spoken, etc. Once complete they had to present it through a role play, game, song, etc. Such projects are an excellent way of developing public speaking and interpersonal skills along with expanding ones knowledge of the world. Taj Mahal Model

The students created a model of the Taj Mahal. When completed they had to discuss its history, development, and importance to India tourism through a role play, game, song, etc. Such projects are an excellent way of developing public speaking and interpersonal skills along with expanding ones knowledge of the world. Current Events

Students are encouraged to read the newspaper and present their stories to the class in their own words. This is an excellent way to develop public speaking and reading comprehension skills, and to promote an understanding of world events.

EXPECTED SCHOOLWIDE LEARNING RESULTS (ESLR’s) - Effective Communicators

Grade 4 completed a poster on the key aspects for Effective Communication. A presentation followed allowing the students to illustrate (e.g. role play, song, games, etc.) such methods (see below). Excellent effort by all! Check out the Language Blogroll to see the photos.

Pak Kret Pottery Field Trip

The students of Grade 4 were treated a real display of Thai culture with a field trip to a pottery factory in Nonthaburi. They had the chance to observe various displays of Thai ceramics and pottery and then were able to make their own works of art that reflect Thai culture using their own creativity. Chinese New Year Celebrations

Chinese New Year Celebrations at Wells was an outstanding success. Grade 4B won 2 out of the three games played in upper elementary and Grade 4 A won the other one. Excellent effort!

WASC Accreditation Process Update

As many of you know Wells International School is partaking in the WASC accreditation process. At present Grade 4 are working on the Effective Communication ESLR (see below) by making posters that illustrate key methods for effective communication.

Petronas Towers - Malaysia

The students had to create a model of a Malaysia’s Petronas Towers. Once complete they had to present their model through a role play, game, song, etc. Such practical work is not only an excellent way of learning about famous landmarks and expanding one’s knowledge of the world, but a key way of developing public speaking and interpersonal skills. We begin our unit on Malaysia with a short Multimedia presentation on the country. The presentation covered key aspects of Malaysia: culture, government, tourist sites, economy, attractions, flag, food, population, religion, and languages spoken, etc. Afterwards the students had to write a half page journal and draw a picture on what they learned about Malaysia.
